Brian and Emily’s Family Ziti
This classic Italian casserole is shared by the owners of Ohio Capital Mortgage, Brian and Emily Flaherty. This recipe has been in their family for years. The fragrant, heart-warming aroma fills the kitchen while it bakes, reminding us that holidays are a time for family and friends.
Make one casserole for your family, or double to serve a crowd. This also freezes well, so you can pop into single serving containers and freeze for hot lunches later, or an easy dinner solution after a full day of shopping!
Ingredients:
- 1# dry ziti pasta
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1# lean ground beef, or substitute pepperoni
- 2 26 oz. jars spaghetti sauce
- 6 oz. provolone cheese sliced
- 1 ½ Cups sour cream
- 6 oz mozzarella cheese, shredded
- 2 Tbsp. grated Parmesan cheese
Directions:
- Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add ziti and cook until al dente, about 8 minutes; drain.
- In a large skillet, brown onion and ground beef over medium heat. Add spaghetti sauce and simmer 15 minutes. (If using pepperoni, omit beef.)
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Butter a 9×13 baking dish and layer as follows: ½ of the ziti, Provolone cheese, sour cream, (add ½ pepperoni here, if using) ½ sauce mixture, remaining ziti, mozzarella cheese and remaining (pepperoni if using) sauce mixture. Top with Parmesan Cheese.
- Bake covered in foil for 30 minutes in the oven, or until cheeses melt.
TIP: Use the biggest 9x 13 pan you have (or slightly bigger) this makes a lot. I find I need less sauce and cheese than the recipe calls for. Just use enough to make a layer.
Serve with your choice of salad or garlic toasted artisan bread. Enjoy!
